I have a love/hate relationship with this new calorie conscious craze that is sweeping the internet. Facebook, Youtube, and now The New York Times are leading the way in giving their users an option of browsing their sites more quickly and efficiently. One of the companies has the right idea, one lacks some key functionality, while the other simply doesn’t look any different. New York Times’ “Times Skimmer” is incredible! It gives you a large thumbnail overview of all the top stories in different categories. The last of the three to employ a diet version of their site, definitely got it right. “Facebook Lite” offers an appealing, much faster loading Facebook experience, but lacks one major feature…Facebook Chat! This is a huge benefit of Facebook, and they thought that it would be a good idea to leave this out of the lite version. Get real, Facebook! Lastly, we get to “Youtube Feather”. Though the marketing is cool, the application looks the exact same as regular Youtube; literally, there is no difference, and it takes just as long to load (“long” being a relative term). So, in this new world of websites shaving off a few pounds, I give NYT a huge thumbs up, Facebook a better luck next time, and Youtube a “you suck”.
